An all-round insolvency guru and fount of knowledge, Max has pretty much seen it all. In a career spanning most types of business and operations, for over 50 years, he’s worked in Australia, the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. With enormous experience in Insolvency and Reconstruction experience, he’s an expert in advising stakeholders in how to restructure underperforming companies, assisting banks with problem loans, managing business sales and conducting formal insolvency administration and investigation. He was a Founding Partner of PPB Advisory in 1983, and played a key role in growing the business to 300 staff nationally before his retirement in 2006.

You might think that after such an illustrious career, he’d be content to spend his days out on the water, skippering his beloved yacht, ‘Ticket to Leave’, but Max just couldn’t stay away. He was persuaded to make his return to the industry to form BPS Recovery in partnership with David Sampson in July 2009.

A Trustee, bankruptcy expert and registered liquidator, Max has supervised and managed over 300 bankruptcies. He’s acted as Receiver and Manager for each of Australia’s four major banks, as well as other financiers. He has run all kinds of businesses, from hotels to timber mills to fishing trawlers. But wait, there’s more – Max is also the longest-serving Trustee in NSW, having been registered in 1980.

Ask Max about his career highlights, and he’ll tell you about managing the receivership of Dainford Limited, which involved over 100 companies – or his experience working with Novotel to turn the hotel business around and make it saleable.

At BPS Recovery, Max oversees the senior managers and provides advice and sign-off to the team. He enjoys giving his team the reins, but staying close at hand to offer his expert business acumen whenever it’s needed. He enjoys the ‘cut and thrust’ of insolvency divisions, with each case having its own narrative and its own challenges from beginning to end. The consummate expert witness, Max is cool under fire, keeps his calm, and brings a sense of humour to every interaction with clients, banks, and stakeholders.
